Conference: the Business Perspective
Brussels - 19 June 2001

Introduction

The aim of this event was to present and to publicise the EESSI specifications, resulting from a mandate to European Standardization from the European Commission and EFTA, aimed at ensuring a consistent and harmonised implementation of Directive 1999/93/EC - the Community framework for electronic signatures.

EESSI, established in January 1999 by the ICT Standards Board, first assessed standardization needs in this field, then launched a programme of activities to meet these needs, carried out in CEN/ISSS (the Information Society Standardisation System of the European Committee for Standardisation) and ETSI (the European Telecommunication Standards Institute), with the full participation of all interested parties.Three panels, representative of the leading edge users of electronic signature, were assessing the relevance of the EESSI specifications, and their contribution from a business perspective to the overall objective of the Directive. Commissioner Liikanen drew the conclusions of the conference.

This event concerned in particular all companies providing information security solutions, or services incorporating them and national regulatory authorities. This Conference offered the opportunity for a broad exchange of views from a wide range of market perspectives, including the regulatory dimension, and allowed for establishing links for further co-operation in the implementation of the EESSI specifications.
